Sea Doo, perhaps best known for its personal watercraft, also makes some pretty exciting sportboats -- and its latest model is definitely one stylish machine.
The new Speedster SK 16 offers twin 110 hp Rotax jet powerplants, along with tournament-style ski boat features -- at a very affordable price.
Sea-Doo created the Speedster SK 16 to be “the ultimate sports car for the water,” explained Ken Grimes, of Bombardier’s Sea-Doo division. “Its impressive styling, outstanding performance and sensational handling make a package that is unrivaled.”
With forward-facing seating for four and abundant storage compartments for all the watersports gear you can carry, the Speedster SK 16 is well-equipped to handle a day of active fun.
Designed for the sport performance seeker, the Speedster SK 16 offers high-end performance of close to 50 mph, fast acceleration and aggressive handling characteristics. It can tow a 200 pound skier, and it offers a wealth of standard convenience features. The SK 16 is just plain fun to drive. The twin engines get it up on plane quickly, and its dual jet pumps make for a fast, exciting ride. At wide open throttle, we reached a top speed of 47.6 mph, at 7,200 rpm.
A weedless intake system is standard equipment, to ensure trouble-free operation. If the jet intake should ever get clogged with waterborne debris, all you have to do to clear it is move a handle at the helm console.
The SK 16’s helm and passenger-side consoles are reached topped with tinted tilt-up wind deflectors, which not only provide a racy “sports car windshield” look, they actually add significant comfort while under way. When we dropped the wind deflector during our speed runs, we suddenly felt the wind push us back into the seat.
The helm pod offers full instrumentation -- including a tournament-style speedometer and tachometers for each of the twin engines, plus a fuel gauge and oil indicators. Throttle controls are built into the side of the boat, adjacent to a driver armrest and a well-positioned rear-view mirror. There’s also a 12v jack, for cellular phones and other take-along gear.
On the passenger side, the console offers a built-in cooler and additional storage. And there’s a large in-floor storage compartment for skis and additional gear.
The helm and forward passenger seats are comfortable swiveling buckets, and the rear seats are contoured fixed seats. Their padding and ergonomic design makes them especially comfortable.
Forward, the closed bow opens like a car hood to reveal a huge watertight storage area. There’s enough room here to stow extra PFDs, wakeboards, kneeboards, skis, coolers and just about anything else you and your friends want to take along on your next run.
At the rear of the boat, there’s more than the usual swim step and boarding ladder. In fact, the rear platform is so wide, Sea-Doo calls it a “staging area.” A built-in recessed step/seat adjacent to the platform is fitted with a handgrip and offers a comfortable place to sit while putting on skis and wakeboards.
A conventional ski tow eye is mounted on the back of the boat, but there’s also a cleverly designed pop-up extended ski pylon. It rises five feet above the deck, for optimum wakeboarding -- then lowers and locks into a concealed position when it is not in use. There’s a rear boarding ladder for swimmers and skiers in the water, and the step is grooved for solid footing. Underneath the rear staging area, you’ll find convenient access to the twin 110 hp Rotax engines, plus additional storage.
