Many people still think of Bombardier Sea-Doo only as a builder of fast and fun personal watercraft. Sea-Doo also builds full-size sportboats -- and those boats are just as fast and fun as any PWC on the water.

Sea-Doo’s biggest sportboat to date is the Challenger 2000, a 20 foot open bow runabout powered by a new Mercury M2 Jet Drive – either the peppy carbureted 210 hp model or the optional electronic fuel-injected 240 hp version.

The 2000 is much more than just a larger version of the popular Challenger 1800. The 2000’s hull is longer, 6 inches wider and has a new bottom to give it the handling of a much larger boat. The entry is flatter, and there are more pronounced chines, for improved performance and a drier ride.

There’s room for eight aboard the Challenger 2000, which has a total rated capacity of 1,440 pounds. It’s designed to pull a waterskier or a wakeboarder with ease, make breathtaking speed runs or laid-back day cruises, and be an all-around practical runabout for boaters with a sense of style.

When it comes to style, the Challenger 2000 is decked out like no boat you’ve ever been aboard. Its fluid lines, colorful trim accents and ergonomic seating designs scream, “Welcome to the 21st century!”

The cockpit is a driver’s dream, with a sports car-like position for the skipper, heavily bolstered seating that is both form-fitting and comfortable, plus dual windscreens for helm and passenger consoles. Passenger and skipper seats are stylized bucket designs, set before a fully instrumented soft-touch dashboard and a passenger console with a locking glove box and a convenient cooler compartment. The passenger side boasts a huge grabrail that forms a decorative side accent.

Aft, there’s a striking-looking three-person seat, adjacent to a curved sunpad. A telescopic ski pylon pops out for wakeboarding, and there’s a ski tow eye built into the transom.

Forward, the open bow seating area offers room for two or three more people, and is stylishly upholstered for maximum comfort. The jet-powered Challenger 2000 launches easily, because there is no outboard or stern drive to tilt up while launching, and no prop hanging down below. The total draft is just 10.5 inches, allowing this boat to run in shallow water that a non-jet boat could never approach.

It’s also easy to start. Unlike a PWC, the Challenger 2000 features an ignition key and an electric starter; but like a PWC, there’s a kill switch. At the helm, the shift and throttle controls are conveniently positioned to the right of the console. The dashboard is fully instrumented and features the same type of gauges and rocker switches you’d expect to find on larger boats. The helm also has a handy remote release latch for the engine hatch/sunpad.

An AM/FM/CD stereo system comes standard on the Challenger 2000, and there’s a 12v outlet for cellular phones or other take-along gear.

Both the passenger and helm consoles come with lift-out compartments that can be used for storage, or as extra cooler space. There’s additional storage under the rear seats and inside an in-floor ski and wakeboard locker. The engine is easily accessible beneath the sunpad, and there’s storage for the boat’s pop-in navigation lighting.

Aft, the Challenger 2000 boasts a wide swim step with a transom-mounted grabrail. A concealed stainless steel boarding ladder pulls out of the step, making it easy for swimmers and skiers to reboard the boat in deep water.

While the boat comes with a long list of standard features -- including a color-matched trailer, an automatic bilge pump and blowers, skid-resistant deck surfaces and cockpit courtesy lights -- there are two options that are particularly useful: We’d opt for the available Bimini top, to limit our onboard exposure to the sun; and the optional mooring cover, when it’s time to put away this exceptionally fun toy.

For more than 30 years, Sea-Doo has brought style, performance and flat-out fun to the world of PWCs. With its fast and racy-looking Challenger 2000 sportboat, this experienced builder is now adding a lot more excitement to the arena of full-size boating, too.
